In Canada, people with disabilities are consistently told, explicitly and implicitly, that they do not have the right to exist freely. In this lecture, community organizer and co-founder of the Disability Justice Network of Ontario, Sarah Jama will discuss the ways the “disabled body” and “disabled mind” are treated through consumerist understandings in order to uphold existing oppressive structures in our society.

Sarah will discuss the history of the disability justice movement in Canada and the U.S., the historical links between colonialism and ableism, will unpack themes around global capitalism, and discuss how to build a world that truly uplifts the rights of people with disabilities. Lastly, she’ll walk you through her journey as an organizer and the steps she has taken towards building inclusive movements. The answer to a better world is a revolution that centres disability justice.

2015.01.16 Invitation to participate in the Trade showcase of University ofToronto Sustainability Conference

My name is Radia Tasnim and I am the External Relations Director for the Sustainable Engineers' Association (SEA) at the University of Toronto. Our mission is to empower engineering students with knowledge, interest, passion and ultimately experience within the domain of sustainable development. SEA hosts numerous events throughout the year, collaborates with other University of Toronto sustainability organizations, and provides opportunities for engineering students to collaborate with students from other disciplines and faculties on university-wide sustainability initiatives.

The University of Toronto Sustainability Conference, organized by SEA is an annual event where great minds gather for their shared passion of a more sustainable future. This year's conference will be held on January 31st and the theme for this year's conference is "Empowering Change". Together, we aim to debate, discuss and envision a more sustainable future for Toronto and share stories of actions that have already been set in motion.

One component of the conference is a Tradeshow where different sustainability related groups within Toronto will showcase the initiatives that they have taken on to drive Toronto towards a more sustainable future. We believe that your organization would be a great fit for the tradeshow at this conference. By being a part of this event, your organization can gain exposure to a wider audience since this conference is a city-wide event. You will gain a platform to share the initiatives that you have taken to contribute in the domain of sustainable development.

The conference is a Toronto-wide event and we want to reach as wide an audience as possible. If you like our initiative, please help us advertise this event at your university/college (conference.sustainable-engineers.org). If you are interested in being a part of this tradeshow, or you have any queries, please don't hesitate to contact me at radia.tasnim@sea.skule.ca. Registration for the conference opens on January 5th, 2015.

2015.01.14 Hart House Announces Hancock Lecture 2015

Join us at Hart House as digital strategist Jennifer Hollett defines and dissects slacktivism in the 2015 Hancock Lecture.

Has traditional activism taken a back seat to trending topics, Facebook shares, online petitions and viral videos? These predominantly youth-driven campaigns are using technology in new and imaginative ways to attract new voices for causes and build formidable movements as they grow.

How has social media changed the way in which we understand activism? Are today's youth a nation of everyday activists or dispassionate citizens who would rather mediate their involvement with the most urgent issues of today through technology?

What would happen if we reject the notion of slacktivism, or better yet embrace it, to build engagement with some of the most pressing issues of our time?

When: Tues., Feb. 10, 2015, at 7 pm
Where: Hart House Theatre
Cost: Free / Register online
Reception to follow: Debates Room, Hart House
